JOHOR BARU - Five men who thought they could get away with stealing an automated teller machine from a bank in Johor Jaya were stopped in their tracks by a security guard.
The men had used ropes to drag the ATM out of the bank in Jalan Ros Merah 2 at around 7.30am yesterday when the guard confronted them. A tussle ensued in which the guard was hit on the head.
The robbers, however, fled empty-handed, leaving the machine on the kerb outside the bank.
Bank officials, who came by later, opened the ATM and removed the money but left the machine where it was for the police to investigate. The guard was rushed to a clinic for treatment.
The bank manager, known only as Huang, said he had been working at the branch for two years.
"This is the first time that we have encountered such an incident," he said, adding that the entire episode was captured on the bank's close circuit television camera (CCTV).
"But it's difficult to identify the robbers as they wore masks," he said.
Seri Alam OCPD Supt Roslan Zainuddin said no arrest had been made.
"The case has been classified under Section 457 of the Penal Code for burglary," he said. "We will examine the CCTV footage and determine whether the suspects are linked to other recent ATM robberies."
