School children in gang arrested for motorcycle thefts in Malaysia

MERSING: Seven school children, some as young as 12 years, were among 10 people arrested by the police in connection with motorcycle thefts here.

Mersing OCPD Deputy Supt M. Kumar said the arrests were made between Friday and Sunday under a special operation dubbed Operasi Lejang Khas.

He said the suspects, aged 12 to 42, were picked up at various locations.

"We believe the group was led by a 42-year-old man and has been carrying out criminal activities for some time", he said yesterday.

He said the arrests were made in separate raids after 10 days of investigations.

DSP Kumar said police also seized three motorcycles, three motorcycle frames, two engines and motorcycle parts during the raids.

He added that the case was being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of not less than one year and not more than seven years, and a fine.
