Shanmugam meets Pope Francis in Vatican City

SINGAPORE - Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam visited Rome and the Vatican City from May 11 to 13.

In the Vatican City, he attended the weekly General Papal Audience at the St Peter's Square and was granted a baciamano (brief audience) with Pope Francis.

He also held separate meetings with the Holy See's Secretary for Relations with States Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher and Prefect of the Secretariat of the Economy Cardinal George Pell.

The leaders reaffirmed the friendly relations between Singapore and the Holy See and agreed to strengthen bilateral co-operation in areas of mutual interest.

While he was in Rome, Mr Shanmugam met his Italian counterpart, Mr Paolo Gentiloni, and discussed trade and investment and counter-terrorism efforts, as well as recent developments in Asia and Europe.
