Singapore and Malaysia carry out first chemical spill exercise

SINGAPORE - The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Malaysia Marine Department (MMD) ran its first ever joint chemical spill exercise at sea, along the Straits of Johor on 9th April 2014.

This exercise was conducted to enhance the preparedness of emergency response agencies from both countries in the event of potential chemical accidents involving the seaborne transportation of hazardous chemicals in the Straits of Johor.

In a statement by MPA's Chief Executive Mr Andrew Tan stated that this exercise would allow both parties to test regional and multi-agency response capabilities so that they can be well-prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to any maritime accidents. Regardless of a collision, chemical leak or oil spill.
