Singapore announces new campaign to draw foreign visitors

SINGAPORE -- The tourism industry in Singapore will get another shot in the arm from the government, with a new campaign to sell the city-state as an attractive and affordable destination, the country's tourist board announced Tuesday.

The move follows a 3 per cent drop in last year's international visitor arrivals. The Singapore Tourism Board will work with airlines, hotels, retailers and others in the industry to attract more international travelers.

The promotion will include discounted flights, free hotel rooms, shopping and dining deals, and events and tours commemorating the 50th anniversary of the country's independence.

The board will cofund some of the private-sector initiatives. It will list available deals on a website and social media, and "invest heavily," advertising in key markets, according to CEO Lionel Yeo.

Spend it to make it

The campaign is expected to cost 20 million Singapore dollars ($14.8 million) in total, including private-sector promotions. It will be targeted toward Singapore's top tourism markets, including Indonesia, China, India and Japan, as well as growing markets such as the Philippines, Vietnam and South Korea.
