Singapore Book Fair 2016 refreshed with new content and activities

Singapore - Singapore Book Fair, the longest running book fair in Singapore, will be held from 3 to 9 June at Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre, Hall 401 and 402 this year.

The annual event is organised by Singapore Press Holdings' (SPH) Chinese Media Group with the support of the Ministry of Education, National Library Board, Singapore Book Publishers Association, Singapore Chinese Publishers Association and ASEAN Book Publishers Association.

It will be officially opened by Mr Ong Ye Kung, Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) & Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence on 4 June.

The Singapore Book Fair will return for its 31st edition refreshed and revamped with new content and activities this year. With "In Books. We Live" as the theme, the event will integrate five major components, namely literature, creativity, family, food and travel to provide a unique experience for visitors to the fair.

SPH's Chinese Media Group launches new books

SPH's Chinese Media Group will be launching 5 new books at the Singapore Book Fair this year. "Celebrity Homes", written by journalists from the Central Integrated Newsroom of Chinese Media Group, brings readers into the homes of celebrities and personalities. "15. Journey" describes the journey of radio station UFM100.3 which marks its 15th anniversary this year. "Shin Min's Q & A", a book by Shin Min Daily News' editorial team, is a compilation of topics covered in the evening daily's "Q & A Column". "Dinner Time", a book by Lianhe Wanbao's editorial team, is a collection of the best columns in the newspaper through the years. Finally, a book called "Eating Between the Lines" (咬文寻味) by Lianhe Zaobao writers will uncover the journey of Singapore's unique food culture, including articles, interviews with executive chefs and their recipes.

Engagement on social media

The Singapore Book Fair is engaging its audience through social media platforms. A publicity campaign was launched on social media about a month ago via online (, Facebook ( and Instagram (@sbookfair). Embracing this year's theme "In Books. We Live", the publicity campaign showed short videos of celebrities, bloggers, writers and movie directors sharing about their reading habits, the books they are reading during bedtime, and their pledge to make reading a habit. The social media campaign has created awareness and garnered much traction for the upcoming event.

Established Speakers and Writers from around the region

Taiwan's leading book publisher, Linking Publishing Co. will bring much flair to this year's Singapore Book Fair with their themed pavilion called "A Touch of Imagination; Books from Taiwan". Four Taiwanese writers Sun Hsin-Yu, Liu Ka-Hsiang, Liu Tze Chieh, and Lee Wei-Jing have been invited to share more about reading, writing, drawing and movie-making.

Another highlight of the fair will be the appearance of Kenneth Pai Hsien-Yung, a renowned Taiwanese writer who is a pioneering figure in the Taiwan's modernist literary movement. He will be speaking on the topic "The Tragic Consciousness of The Story of the Stone: the Importance of the Last Forty Chapters".

Brand New Creative & Lifestyle Zone The organiser will set up a Creative & Lifestyle Zone showcasing brands and merchandises by local designers and entrepreneurs, such as Ang Ku Kueh Girl & Friends, Miniature Asian Chef, SoapLah, Sew Into It , and When I was Four. There will also be lifestyle workshops such as Soap-Making, Peranakan Tile Colouring, Letterpress Printing, and Sewing to engage visitors at the fair.

Over at the Asian Creative Zone, De Dynasty Arts will set up a booth to sell intricate hand-made crafts and goods.

Focus on comic art Singapore Book Fair 2016 will also give comic fans a treat with its focus on the art of comic drawing. The Association of Comic Artists (Singapore) (ACAS) will be bringing in DC & Marvel-trained artists from the region, who will share about the art of comic drawing. ACAS will also extend a copy of a newly launched graphic novel to visitors at their booth at no charge.

Partnership with local entrepreneurs

SBF2016 is also partnering Ms Wang Shijia, founder and owner of local brand, Ang Ku Kueh Girl & Friends. She has designed an exclusive tote bag for SBF2016. Ms Wang will launch her new book "The Magical Dragon Playground" at the fair, and will share her experience as an entrepreneur.

A book cafe will also be set up by The Travelling C.O.W (Chefs on Wheels) to make reading an even more enjoyable experience.

Lifestyle Workshops

Visitors to the fair can also pick up handicraft-making skills at one of the workshops.

- Basic Cold Process Soap Making: 4 June & 5 June (11am - 1pm)

- Sewing (Book covers and Bags): 5 June (1pm - 3pm), 7-9 June (2pm - 4pm)

- Letterpress Printing: 4 June (1pm - 3pm, 7pm - 9pm)

- Peranakan Tile Colouring: 4 & 5 June (4pm - 5pm), 6 June (5pm - 6pm)

Other highlights Singapore Book Fair will continue to feature publishers from Singapore and Asia. There will be talks by renowned writers, media personalities and medical experts from Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan.

In addition, there will be meet-the-author sessions; storytelling and sharing session by award-winning directors, celebrities and more. Renowned Singapore movie director, Anthony Chen, who directed the award-winning film "Ilo Ilo", will share about his role as producer for his new movie "Distance".

Pre-Sales Event: Singapore Book Fair Super Deals Singapore Book Fair will launch a pre-sales promotion on the Trezo app, a mobile e-commerce platform by SPH. From 20 - 27 May 2016, visitors can purchase books and exhibitors' merchandises at discounted prices during the promotion period. Users can download the Trezo app via Apple Store or Google Play.

Singapore Book Fair is open daily from 11am to 10pm except for 3 June (from 4pm - 10pm) and 9 June (11am - 8pm). Admission is free.
