Singapore-registered barge runs aground at Pedra Branca

SINGAPORE - A Singapore-registered barge named POE Giant 12 ran aground at Pedra Branca on Tuesday morning at 6.45am amid bad weather.

Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement that it was carrying two bulk loader cranes and had left Singapore for Kuantan in Malaysia on Dec 25.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the barge had turned back to Singapore after encountering inclement weather and subsequently ran aground at Pedra Branca due to adverse sea conditions.

Salvage operations are currently underway in prevailing heavy sea conditions, said MPA. It also said it will be conducting further investigations into the incident.

The Straits Times reported that there have been no reports on oil spillage or injuries.
