Singaporeans going ahead with trips

SINGAPOREANS seem undeterred from visiting Kunming, despite the train-station slashing horror that left 29 people dead three days ago.

Two major tour agencies here said bookings to the capital of China's Yunnan province remained consistent during a travel fair over the weekend by the National Association of Travel Agents Singapore.

A spokesman for Chan Brothers said the company had received a couple of calls from customers concerned about upcoming trips to Kunming, but there were no cancellations as of Monday.

"We don't expect the incident to have a residual effect on overall demand to Kunming and the surrounding Yunnan region, as it is really an isolated incident," she added.

Dynasty Travel's director of marketing communications, Ms Alicia Seah, also said it was unlikely to affect demand for travel to Kunming as it was not a "prolonged" event.

That it happened at a train station and not a tourist site was a factor as well, she said. "Our tour groups usually travel by coach or by air."

Both agencies are monitoring the situation for any developments.

More than 140 people were injured in the attack, suspected to have been carried out by Uighur separatists.
