S'pore embassy hosts Raya open house, 48th National Day reception

SINGAPORE - The Singapore High Commission hosted an "open house" for Bruneian officials and businessmen yesterday in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidil Fitri and Singapore's 48th National Day.

Welcoming guests at The Empire Hotel and Country Club was Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs Masagos Zulkifli and the High Commissioner His Excellency Jaya Ratnam.

Among the attendees were Brunei cabinet ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, businessmen and community leaders.

"Since Singapore's National Day this year coincides with Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, we decided to hold an open house to get into the spirit of Hari Raya," said the High Commission in a statement.

Commenting on the long and storied relationship between Brunei and the island-state, the High Commission said, "Relations between Brunei and Singapore are excellent. I'm glad to say that both sides are aware of the importance of bilateral ties."

"President Dr Tony Tan made a state visit here in May this year and Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean will be leading a delegation of younger ministers to Brunei next week. We hope to welcome His Majesty to Singapore for a visit next year."

The diplomatic office added that its government is always seeking new areas of collaboration with the Sultanate, having recently inked agreements in the fields of health and the environment.

"We have also been working to develop cooperation in the youth sector, particularly in encouraging youth leadership and volunteerism." The High Commission also held a separate National Day event for Singaporean citizens residing in Brunei yesterday evening.
