S'pore NGO seeks help for flood-hit Kelantan schools to get ready for new school term

SINGAPORE - Singapore non-government organisation (NGO) Relief.sg (RSG) has made an urgent call for volunteers to head up north to participate in Kelantanese efforts to help schools receive their students in restored premises come Jan 11.

The start of the new school term - which had been postponed a week by the authorities because of the flood situation - is fast approaching, yet many affected schools remain deluged by mud and debris.

RSG is organising the school-cleaning mission under its From Singapore With Love initiative, partnering with Malaysian NGO Centre for Better Living's (CENBET) #OpsHarapan project.

The mission dates are Jan 8 to 12. Planning for subsequent missions is in the pipeline.

This is a continuation of RSG's current collaboration with CENBET to deploy water filtration equipment for providing clean water for flood victims. RSG had embarked on a relief mission on New Year's Day to provide clean water for victims of the recent Malaysia floods.

Organisations interested in sending its employees to volunteer and/or sponsoring RSG's missions may contact Jonathan How, CEO of RSG.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post on Monday, Minister of Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen, said that Malaysia has thanked Singapore for its efforts in helping those affected by the floods in Malaysia.

"Our SAF teams helping victims of the floods in Malaysia met with some VIPs in Kuala Krai yesterday - Malaysian Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, YBM Tengku Mohammad Rizam, and Malaysian Chief Defence Force General Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin. LTC Fan Mun Poh, mission commander of the water purification team, interacted with them and poured them some water from our purification units. It was a good meeting and they thanked the SAF for our efforts," said the Faceook post.
