S'pore welcomes UN move on Syria

Singapore has welcomed the United Nations Security Council's move to adopt a binding resolution on ridding Syria of chemical weapons.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in response to media queries, said on Saturday that Singapore also supports the decision by the executive council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to establish special procedures for the swift destruction of Syria's chemical weapons programme.

The organisation is the international authority which polices the treaty outlawing chemical weapons.

"Being a small island state, Singapore strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons under any circumstances, which constitutes a violation of international law and a threat to international peace and security," the ministry said.

Singapore was also deeply concerned by the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and hoped that peace talks aimed at bringing about a political transition would be convened urgently, it added.

The talks, dubbed Geneva II, are planned for November.
