Sporting advantage

SINGAPORE - For Mr Ian Kwek, 24, and Mr Emir Hamza, 26, studying at International Sports Academy (ISA) was a step in the right direction.

Mr Kwek, a programme executive at the Sports & Lifestyle department of Chinese Swimming Club, said: "I wanted a well-planned study programme that was condensed and professionally delivered.

"After meeting the course advisers from ISA, I was convinced by their passion towards delivering sports education at a high level."

He graduated last year with an International Sports Diploma in Sports Management from ISA.

He said: "I have always enjoyed the management aspect in sports and how essential it is in professional athletics in any sports organisation.

"The course modules I have studied such as sports marketing, administration, public relations and Sports Event and Facilities Management have provided me with in-depth information on how to run and assist in a sporting and recreation department.

"It also guided me in managing events at Chinese Swimming Club... My current job at Chinese Swimming Club, was also recommended by ISA.

"The administrative support from ISA was superb. They were always open to help me with any issues I was facing and went the extra mile when needed.

"I commend their commitment in providing excellent services."

SPORTS COACHING

After graduating with a Higher National Institute of Technical Education Certificate in Sports Management in 2010, Mr Emir Hamza pursued an International Sports Diploma in Sports Coaching programme at ISA. He graduated in 2011.

Mr Emir, sports director at a secondary school, said: "Mainly, I made this academic choice because the course duration is only one year instead of three. More importantly, it is internationally recognised.

"I aspire to be a sports director... and the diploma serves as a strong foundation towards taking a degree in Sports Management."

Mr Emir was matched to his job by ISA and he will work closely with them in the school's sports education programme, which involves educating student-athletes in topics such as sports psychology, sports medicine, fitness training and recreation management.

Mr Emir said: "Because I studied this module during my course at ISA, I am able to act as a mentor to the students."

He said the modules he learnt such as sports strength and conditioning allow him to share the proper application of the periodisation cycle, which refers to the phases of strength conditioning within a training plan, with the students.
