ST named Newspaper of the year again in survey

SINGAPORE - The Straits Times has been named Singapore's Newspaper of the Year once again.

An annual survey by Marketing magazine showed that the flagship daily continues to be a favourite of advertisers here.

Marketing, a monthly publication on advertising, marketing and media intelligence in Asia, documents Singapore marketers' preferred newspapers.

Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), which publishes the ST, saw eight of its publications making Marketing's Top 10, up from seven last year.

The Business Times retained its No.2 ranking from last year. The New Paper was No.5, My Paper No.6, Lianhe Zaobao No.7, Lianhe Wanbao No.8, and Shin Min Daily News No.9. Berita Harian joined the Top 10 for the first time.

Business weekly The Edge was ranked third in the survey while MediaCorp's Today came in fourth.

In its July issue, Marketing noted ST's development into a "fully integrated newsroom", with its print and online divisions working in tandem to supply news to readers in real time.

It said that ST Online is currently recognised as Asia's best newspaper website by Wan-Ifra, a global organisation of the world's press, and that its reach has increased to about three million unique visitors each month.

The magazine also highlighted ST's attention to live blogging over the past years, especially in its coverage of landmark events such as Singapore's general elections and this year's Oscars.

Straits Times editor Warren Fernandez said: "The ST newsroom has been working hard over the past year to deliver content across platforms to readers wherever they are, as and when they want it. We do this day in and day out, and especially for some of the recent big stories, from the Kovan double murders, to the haze that hit our region and the Boston bombings.

"It's gratifying that this has not gone unnoticed by our readers and advertisers. With their continued support, we can do even more."

The Straits Times appeals to a diverse base of advertisers, wrote the magazine, citing the paper's attraction to advertisers in industries such as retail, telecommunications, automobile and property development.

The survey, which was conducted between April and June this year, polled 763 respondents, 578 of whom were advertisers and 185 of whom were marketing agency professionals.

The respondents came from a range of industries, including banking, property and construction, IT and telecommunications, and travel and tourism.
