SINGAPORE - The war between StarHub and SingTel to woo football fans intensified when the green team yesterday extended rebates to entice customers to choose StarHub for watching the Barclays Premier League (BPL).
StarHub said new and existing pay-TV subscribers would get rebates of up to $600, spread over 20 months, to watch SingTel's BPL broadcast over StarHub TV. This is an increase from rebates of up to $300 over 10 months, announced last Saturday.
The new offer applies to customers who sign up before Sept 30, and replaces last week's offer.
SingTel holds BPL broadcast rights, but BPL content must be made available to other pay-TV subscribers under the Government's cross-carriage measure.
Last month, SingTel said it would charge $59.90 a month just for BPL. StarHub customers also pay this to have BPL carried on StarHub TV. Previously, SingTel offered BPL with other sports content for $34.90.
Now, SingTel customers who pay $64.90 for a Gold Pack plan get BPL, Uefa Champions League and other content, including non-sports channels. Last Saturday, SingTel offered $480 in rebates - over 24 months - for a pay-TV and fibre-broadband bundle.
SingTel said yesterday that even with StarHub's new offer, the red team's Gold Pack bundle "continues to provide the best value".
"Only we have the complete football coverage fans want, including the Uefa Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and La Liga," said a spokesman.
SingTel customers - but not StarHub subscribers - can also watch BPL matches live, via a mobile app from the telco.
