StarHub to offer compensation for disruptions

StarHub customers affected by the fire at SingTel's Bukit Panjang Exchange earlier this month will be compensated - even though StarHub has yet to discuss compensation with SingTel, from which it leases fibre capacity.

In a media statement released on Friday night, StarHub said it will compensate some 35,000 customers who experienced fibre broadband problems.

Affected TV customers will enjoy free access to more than 170 channels for a month, while broadband customers will receive a $10 supermarket voucher each. Digital voice customers will get one month of their subscription fee waived.

Details will be mailed to affected customers.

StarHub's chief marketing officer Jeannie Ong said: "This compensation is a gesture of our appreciation to our customers who have shown patience and understanding towards us during this challenging period."

Last week, SingTel offered its 60,000 affected broadband customers free speed boosts for the next three months, while the 44,000 customers whose mioTV services were disrupted will receive one month of free pay-TV channels. Those customers whose voice lines were affected will get a month's worth of free local calls.

The fire also damaged OpenNet cables housed in the exchange, affecting both StarHub and M1 customers.

StarHub's cable TV, cable broadband and digital voice services were restored on Oct 10, and all its affected fibre broadband connections were running by Oct 18.

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore is currently investigating the fire.
