THERE is a rapidly growing demand for higher education in the world today as education plays an increasingly important role in people's lives.
In Singapore, there are many private education institutions that offer individuals a myriad of courses ranging from business to engineering to fashion.
Among them are the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS), FTMSGlobal Academy, Manchester Business School and S P Jain School of Global Management.
Founded in 1956, MDIS is the oldest not-for-profit professional tertiary institute with two campuses in Stirling Road and Dhoby Ghaut.
The institution houses eight schools - School of Engineering, School of Fashion & Design, School of Health & Life Sciences, School of Media & Communications, School of Psychology, School of Technology and E-learning, School of Tourism & Hospitality and MDIS Business School.
These schools offer courses in Business and Management, Engineering, Fashion Design, Information Technology, Health and Life Sciences, Mass Communications, Psychology, and Travel and Tourism and Hospitality Management in collaboration with highly-acclaimed universities in Australia, France, UK and US.
Designed to provide its students with opportunities to develop professionally, MDIS emphasises practical learning through well-equipped facilities such as state-of-the-art classrooms, life sciences and computer laboratories, a hospitality training centre, a mass communications studio, an engineering laboratory and workshop as well as a fashion studio.
MDIS also acknowledges the importance of providing relevant personal development training for students called the "MDIS Experience".
Said an MDIS spokesperson: "The MDIS Experience Workshop aims to build students' self-confidence, self-motivation, creativity and communication skills so that the MDIS student has CLASS (Confident and Creative, a Leader who is Articulate, Self-motivated and Successful with a Global Identity)."
The school's EduTrust certification, awarded by the Council for Private Education in 2010, was also renewed for another four years last December.
Said MDIS secretary-general Dr R. Theyvendran: "The EduTrust certification is a strong seal of approval for MDIS' quality standards and is a reflection of our desire to be the choice for lifelong learning with global recognition."
The school will hold an open house on March 7 from 10am to 5.30pm at its Stirling Road campus. For more information, log on to http://openhouse.mdis.edu.sg
Another tertiary institution that offers a range of courses for students who wish to pursue their education privately in Singapore and overseas is FTMSGlobal Academy.
Established in 1986, the school offers diploma and degree programmes in accounting, business, finance, hospitality and tourism, information technology, computing, management and English language programmes.
It has campuses in Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Sri Lanka and Uganda.
FTMSGlobal prides itself on its hospitality and tourism management programmes.
The hospitality curriculum is not only balanced but also industry-relevant as students get on-the-job training that gives them in-depth experience in the hospitality industry.
The school also provides a six-month industrial attachment for its students so that they can apply what they have learnt in the classroom and gain real-world experience that will help them in their careers.
