HA NOI (VNS) - The suspect in the murder of a Vietnamese businesswoman has fled China, causing many difficulties to police's investigation, a Vietnamese diplomat based in Guangzhou said. The 45-year-old tea businesswoman, Ha Thuy Linh, was the director of the Ha Linh Oo Long Tea Company in the Central Highlands (Tay Nguyen) province of Lam Dong. She was poisoned during a business trip to China in September and died three days later.
Talking to Vietnam News Agency on Thursday, the Vietnamese Consul General in Guangzhou, Nguyen Tien Hong, said that right after the incident, the Vietnamese side had closely co-ordinated with local relevant agencies to investigate and find the suspect.
The consulate general had done the necessary legal work to appropriately protect the Vietnamese citizen's rights abroad in a timely manner as well as supported the victim's relatives to come to China, Hong said.
The diplomat also said that the repatriation of Linh's body had not been carried out to wait for the result of the second autopsy for investigation.
There had not been any official information about the time for repatriation from the Chinese authorities yet, Hong said, adding that the consulate general would work to help bring Linh's body back to Viet Nam for a funeral.
Ha Thuy Linh was last seen healthy on September 19 when she flew to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport for a business trip and was accompanied by a local to Dongguan City. She was then anaesthetised and robbed of all her money and passport. She was found the next morning and hospitalised the same day as she felt ill. Doctors found many bruises on her body, which damaged her pancreas and spleen. Linh died on September 22.
Local police immediately informed the Vietnamese consulate general of her death and started an autopsy for investigation on September 29 with Linh's sister, Ha My Chau, who came to Guangzhou after the incident.
Due to the seriousness of the case, a special investigation team was sent from Beijing to support police in Guangzhou.
Linh's company was established in 2008 and is known as one of the largest tea exporter in Lam Dong Province. The investigation is going on.
