Three teens allegedly assaulted cabby for $5

SINGAPORE - Three teenage friends allegedly beat up a cabby - all for a coin pouch containing just five dollars.

According to charge sheets read out to them in Malay in District Court, Muhammad Fauzi Fitri Kamaruzaman, 17, grabbed Mr Abdul Latif Ismail's neck from behind while Muhammad Aizan Abdullah, 17, and Muhammad Istiqlal Hamdan, 16, each punched him three times in the face.

They were charged with committing robbery with hurt on Monday and ordered to be remanded until Feb 10 for investigations to be completed.

Police said the taxi driver made a report that he had been assaulted and robbed at 1.40am on Sunday in Japanese Garden Road in Jurong.

Using his description of his attackers, investigators established the suspects' identities and whereabouts. Officers from Clementi Police Division arrested the trio within eight hours of the report being lodged.

It is believed that the cabby, who is in his 50s, had picked up the teens at a block of Housing Board flats in West Coast Road.

If convicted, they could each be jailed between five and 20 years and caned at least 12 times.
