Time for rivals to iron out differences

Time for rivals to iron out differences

SINGAPORE - The feud between pay-TV rivals StarHub and SingTel does not augur well for them or for consumers ("StarHub, SingTel trade charges as EPL row continues", Tuesday; and "Deadline for EPL pay-TV orders is 4pm tomorrow", Wednesday).

The Media Development Agency (MDA) would no doubt have been closely monitoring the situation.

Any further escalation of disputes between the two telcos should be avoided.

Given this state of affairs, the late assurance on Tuesday by both operators that football fans will not be deprived of the opportunity to watch the Barclays Premier League matches tomorrow is a step in the right direction.

It is high time the two operators sat down together in the presence of the MDA to iron out their differences in a responsible and amicable manner.

Any disputes between high-profile competitors would adversely affect our economy and image.
