Tips from teaching experts at education expo

SINGAPORE - Actress Irene Ang will join a cast of teaching experts at next month's inaugural Asia Education Expo.

Along with leading motivational speakers, principals, master teachers and academics, the local comedy star will be speaking at the event held at the Singapore Expo from Nov 20 to Nov 24.

Other guests include applied linguistics expert Ken Hyland from the University of Hong Kong, National Institute of Education professor Anthony John Kunnan and sprint legend C. Kunalan. They will address advancements in education, how to develop language and oral skills and help weaker students with maths.

Another highlight will be an extension of The Straits Times Teachers Forum - renamed the ST-AEX Teachers Forum - on Nov 22, where the theme is "The News in Authentic Learning".

Speakers include psychologist Sha-en Yeo, newspapers-in-education expert Lynne Cahill from The West Australian daily and the Education Ministry's deputy director for character and citizenship education Puvan Ariaratnam.

The Straits Times' Schools editor Serene Goh said: "Young people are learning in ways that many adults don't even understand. Discussing these trends in an arena like this will allow teachers to swap notes."

Organiser SPHere Exhibits' general manager Elaine Chia said: "The expo will serve the growing education advancements and needs of educators across Asia."

To mark the inaugural conference, The Straits Times and SPHere Exhibits are offering every school in Singapore four free three-day passes, each valued at $400. In addition, schools can send up to six teachers for the ST-AEX Teachers Forum for free.
