Tuition teacher gets 125 years for raping student

ALOR SETAR, Malaysia - A tuition teacher was jailed a total of 125 years after being found guilty on five counts of raping a 15-year-old student.

The Sessions Court also ordered Lee Kian Kiong, 24, to be given a total of 10 strokes of the rotan, two for each of the five charges.

Judge Azhar Mokhtar sentenced him to 25 years in jail for each charge.

He ordered the first two 25-year sentences to run consecutively and the remaining three 25-year sentences to run concurrently with the first one.

Lee has to be in jail for 50 years.

Lee, who taught Mathematics at a tuition centre here, was calm when Azhar meted out the sentence yesterday.

He was found guilty of raping the girl at the centre on Feb 4, March 3, March 5 and March 8 while the fifth offence was committed at a house in Taman Sri Kota here on March 13.

Azhar said he hoped the sentence would serve as a lesson to Lee and act as a strong deterrent to other educators and the public from committing such a crime.

"Even if the accused and the victim may like each other, it is still an offence to have sexual relationship as she is still underage.

"As a teacher, you should know the limits between you and your students," he added.

Defence counsel John Fernandez requested for a stay of punishment pending an appeal, saying that Lee had never been absent from the trial.

Azhar allowed the request but increased bail from RM18,000 (S$6,800) to RM40,000.

He also ordered Lee to surrender his passport to the court and pay prosecution costs of RM2,000 in default six months in jail.
