UN adopts S'pore's resolution on 'sanitation for all'

SINGAPORE - The United Nations has adopted Singapore's resolution to designate November 19 as World Toilet Day.

The resolution - sanitation for all - was co-sponsored by more than 100 countries. It calls for greater attention to be paid to the global sanitation crisis through the commemoration of World Toilet Day. The UN estimates that 2.5 billion people worldwide still lack access to improved sanitation.

"This shows that we still have far to go. The lack of adequate sanitation has major consequences for health, economic growth, gender equality and the personal dignity of the poorest people in the world," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in a joint statement on Wednesday.
