Unfair to make unsubstantiated claims against lawyers: Law Society

The article ("Some runaway workers fake their injuries, say bosses"; Monday) quoted SPG Marine director Lim Tek Seng as saying that some lawyers have encouraged workers to fake accidents by promising them big sums in work injury compensation.

This is a serious allegation against lawyers that should not be made lightly and without any proper substantiation.

The profession has clear regulations concerning the conduct of its members and any employer can lay a complaint against a lawyer believed to be acting improperly, rather than making such sweeping allegations in the press.

Lawyers have been playing a critical role in advising workers on their rights and remedies when they are injured, sometimes on a pro bono basis, and it is unfair for their efforts to be undermined by such unsubstantiated claims.
