Prominent S'pore criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan dies

SINGAPORE - Prominent criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan died this morning at Singapore General Hospital, reported The Straits Times. He was 67 years old.

According to The New Paper, a family spokesperson said in a statement that Mr Subhas had passed away from heart failure.

Mr Subhas reportedly suffered from multiple health problems, including long-standing heart and kidney ailments.

Early last year, doctors had advised his family to "take him off" support machines after his kidneys failed.

Yet the lawyer returned to action after a six-month break.

Mr Subhas, who was a senior partner at RHTLaw Taylor Wessinge, had earned a reputation for defending notorious criminals, often pro bono. The president of the Association of Criminal Lawyers in Singapore was well-known for handling a number of high-profile cases, including those involving convicted murderers Took Leng How, Anthony Ler and Leong Siew Chor.

He is survived by his wife, Vimala, 56, and son Sujesh, 24.

Many have taken to social media to express their condolences and pay tribute to the popular lawyer. In a Facebook post, Law and Foreign Affairs Minister Mr K. Shanmugam wrote that his heart was filled with sadness at hearing the news.

"Subhas' strong sense of justice, has made him a legal legend to the Bar as well as general public. His unswerving belief in fair representation for the accused, and granting them a second chance in life, makes him an inspiring role model for the rest of the Criminal Bar," Mr Shanmugam wrote.
