Why not keep train doors open longer?

Last week, I was at Bishan station waiting for a train on the Circle Line towards Dhoby Ghaut.

It was 7.45am and the platform was very crowded, apparently because an earlier train had been delayed.

I could not board the first train that arrived, but did manage to get on the second.

When we arrived at Paya Lebar, because of the overcrowding, it took longer than usual for the passengers to alight. Before all those who wanted to get off there managed to do so, the door-closing announcement came on.

This set off a small panic, with passengers rushing in. Elderly people and women carrying toddlers were caught in the crush.

As the doors closed, some passengers were caught between them.

Not many managed to board, and it seemed that not all who wanted to alight did so either.

The authorities have put up posters encouraging passengers to board the trains only after those who want to alight do so, but clearly that is not enough.

Perhaps SMRT can keep the train doors open a little longer during peak hours, especially at interchange stations.
