Woman jailed for cheating classmates

A woman was jailed for 11 months on Wednesday after she cheated three victims of $24,590.

Kalimah Osman, 56, told a fellow religious studies classmate that her husband was working in Interpol and had been assigned to take care of a politician.

She also lied that the politician had given her family eight OCBC bank shares.

She promised Madam Zakiah Mohamed Ariff, 60, that a $1,000 investment would earn a profit of $3,000 every quarter. The victim handed her $850 as Kalimah owed the older woman $150 previously.

Kalimah also offered other "investment schemes".

She offered gold and handbags at discounted prices and exchanged old handbags for new ones.

She pleaded guilty to cheating three victims of a total of $24,590 between January and May this year.

Kalimah could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined on each count.

No restitution has been made.
