Yishun death: Police arrest 34-year-old Malaysian woman for suspected murder

SINGAPORE - A 76-year-old man was found dead in his 2nd-storey flat at Block 114 Yishun Ring Road on Saturday night (Nov 21).

A 34-year-old woman, believed to be the flat tenant, was arrested by the police. Earlier, she was seen crying at the foot of the block.

The police were first alerted of a heated quarrel outside the flat. Upon arrival at around 11pm, they discovered a gruesome sight. The victim, Mr William Wong, was found in a pool of blood in his master bedroom, while there were blood stains splattered in the house and corridor extending for 10m.

Medical responders later pronounced the man dead at 11.38pm.

A knife believed to be the murder weapon was found by the police. Three bamboo poles and a few baking equipment were also taken away by the police for investigation.

Mr Wong's wife, Mdm Winnie Teo, told Lianhe Wanbao that she was returning home from work at around 11pm on Saturday when she noticed a trail of blood leading to her flat.

Mdm Teo, who works as a cleaner, refused to believe that her husband was dead. Insisting that he was just involved in a minor scuffle with the tenant, she told Lianhe Wanbao initially: "He bled a lot, but it shouldn't be a big deal."

It was only after she made 10 calls to his mobile phone when she finally accepted that he was dead. With tears in her eyes, she said in shock: "He's really dead!"

The incident happened between 10pm to 11pm on Saturday, Lianhe Wanbao reported. The 34-year-old suspect is a Malaysian working in Singapore as a dishwasher.

Neighbours told Lianhe Wanbao that the altercation started at around 8pm on Saturday night. Shu Fen, 32, said that around 15 minutes into the heated argument, the rattling sounds of bamboo poles could be heard.

At 11pm, the argument got louder. It was then another neighbour, Mohan, called the police as he felt that the situation was escalating.

A neighbour of Mr Wong said that the suspect spoke to the police in a smattering of English, Mandarin, and Malay, and indicated that the 34-year-old woman had cuts on her hands too.

The crime scene extended over three floors, from the ground level to the third floor. About 10 police vehicles were parked near the crime scene which was cordoned off for nearly seven hours, Lianhe Wanbao added.

Residents had to produce identification before they were allowed to enter the elevator at the ground floor, which was also cordoned off.

Neighbours described Mr Wong, who was a Yishun resident for about 32 years, as a cheerful man who lived harmoniously with them.

Mr Wong's body was removed from the crime scene at around 6am on Sunday, Nov 22.

As she identified her husband's body earlier today, Mdm Teo wailed: "How could he die just like that!" There were wounds on his cheeks and chin.

She later contacted Mr Wong's children from a previous marriage. His daughter was the first to arrive at the morgue at 10am, while his son, seated in a wheelchair, arrived at 11am, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

"I will not forgive her. My husband of 21-years is now dead... there's no one to accompany me," Mdm Teo said.
