Young American woman found shot dead in Mexico

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico - A 20-year-old American woman has been found shot dead in a small truck in a village in northern Mexico, officials said Thursday.

Kathelyn Nicole Lambert Koegler was found dead in the village of Carichi in Chihuahua state, which borders the United States, the state prosecutor's office said in a statement.

She was shot in the body and head and found Tuesday evening in the vehicle, abandoned outside a clinic.

The statement said a probe was underway but gave no further details.

The woman's family reportedly owned a home in the village.

Chihuahua has been ravaged by drug related violence in recent years.

The state's city of Ciudad Juarez was notorious in the 1990s for the murders of hundreds of women, many of them factory workers showing signs of extreme sexual violence.
