A youth was sentenced to probation and community service yesterday after conspiring with his girlfriend to pressure a 13-year-old girl he met on Facebook into having sex with him.
Alistair Pow Jun Hao resorted to the scheme because his own girlfriend rejected his frequent requests for sex and only consented once a month.
Pow, 19, turned to Facebook and found the 13-year-old victim through a mutual friend, and invited her to his flat in February last year to "chat as well as watch movies".
After the girl refused a request for sex, Pow hatched the plot with his girlfriend to pressure the victim.
Pow called his girlfriend using his mobile phone, and she pretended to be a male friend.
She told the girl in a "coarse" voice that she would stop being pals with Pow if the girl refused him sex.
Pow then said his friendship with the "male" friend would "sour" and that it would also affect the relationship between him and the girl if she did not agree to have sex.
The girl said she would "think about it" and eventually relented.
She asked him later if he loved her. Pow nodded and said he would not leave her, court documents state.
Pow was sentenced to 24 months of probation and ordered to perform 150 hours of community service, after pleading guilty to two counts of having sex with the minor and another young girl.
Four other charges, committed in 2012 with the latter, a 14-year-old girl who was Pow's girlfriend at the time, were taken into consideration.
The offences occurred when he was doing his national service.
His lawyer, Mr Jeffrey Yosef Lau, argued that Pow was a first-time offender and needed to provide for his mother, who is divorced and is employed as a catering assistant.
He said his client, employed by a karaoke chain, wrongly believed that sex was permissible as long as consent was given by the other party, regardless of age.
"The accused has had little parental guidance or sex education as his father left the family when he was two years old," said Mr Lau.
He had added that Pow and his current girlfriend, a cashier, intend to get married but this was postponed due to the charges against him.
The maximum penalty for having sex with a minor aged under 16 years is a jail term of 10 years and a fine.
