SingFirst's campaign slogan lost in Tamil translation

SINGAPORE - A photo of the Singaporeans First (SingFirst) party's press conference on Friday is making the rounds on social media after netizens pointed out that the Tamil text of its campaign slogan was not properly done.

The supposed Tamil text on the party's banner does not form any known Tamil words, speakers of the language pointed out.

SingFirst secretary-general Tan Jee Say told The Straits Times on Friday night that the error has been corrected.

SingFirst had displayed its campaign slogan prominently on a banner at a media conference to introduce its candidates for the coming election.

Its slogan "Restore our nation" was also printed in English, Chinese and Malay.

Facebook user Sherene Jeevitha commented: "The Tamil words at the back are wrong. Google translation and not even Tamil alphabets in the first place!!!"

Photos of the press conference were being circulated with a screenshot of the comment by Ms Jeevitha.

When contacted, Mr Tan told The Straits Times in a text message: "I am aware after being alerted. We are putting it right."

In a second message, he said: "The proper words have been put in place."
