Sng aims to transform athletics

FORMER Singapore runner Sng Sze Hiang has unveiled his team ahead of Monday's election of office bearers for the Singapore Athletic Association (SAA).

The director of consumer electronics company Akira Corporation will be up against incumbent SAA president Tang Weng Fei's team at the biennial election of the national sports association.

In his manifesto on Wednesday, the 52-year-old wrote that the "collective determination to transform the SAA" was what drove him to stand for election.

He added: "The revival of Singapore athletics is a noble mission which must combine knowledge, experience, passion, good processes, teamwork and a strong sense of fairness and transparency."

He has so far declined to meet the press, preferring to go public only after the election.

Former national runner Ho Mun Cheong, who is running for the post of honorary secretary, is the team's designated spokesman.

He believes the team's wealth of experience will help take the local track and field scene forward, especially with next year's home SEA Games on the horizon.

Said Ho, 65: "Many of our team members are former national athletes or national coaches. We have been on the ground, we are all passionate sportsmen, and we believe all these will help us serve the community better."

He cited developing an athlete-centric approach, uniting all 22 SAA affiliates and creating a platform for athletes and coaches to voice their views as three key areas his team will focus on.

On Sng's slate are three members of the current management committee - Leong Lee San (chairman, race walking), vice-presidents Loh Chan Pew (competitions, organising) and Steven Lee (training and selection).
