Swimming: Old marks fall

Two long-standing marks in swimming were erased on Wednesday.

Sng Ju Wei's boys Under-14 200m freestyle and Joscelin Yeo's girls Under-14 200m individual medley records were broken on the second day of the 45th National Age Group Swimming Championships at the Singapore Sports School.

Sng's record of 1 min 56.71sec, set at the 18th South-east Asia (SEA) Age Group Swimming Championships in 1994 was broken by Darren Chua, who clocked a winning time of 1:56.21.

Yeo's mark of 2:23.42sec, set at the Singapore Swimming Association (SSA) SEA Games Trial in 1993, was bettered by Tan Jing-E, who won in 2:22.58.

Both Darren and Jing-E are from the Swimfast Aquatic Club, whose head coach is former Singapore swim star David Lim.

Aloysius Yeo, high performance manager at the Singapore Swimming Association, lauded both Jing-E and Darren.

He said: "It's great to have the two of them step up to break these records after over 20 years.

"This can only be a good sign for the future of swimming in Singapore and hopefully it motivates them to achieve international success like Ju Wei and Joscelin in the near future."

Those weren't the only records broken on Wednesday night.

Darren also beat his own record in the 200m individual medley - set at the SSA Time Trials last month - lowering it by 2.43sec when he froze the clock at 2:10.83.

Francis Fong, also from Swimfast, beat his own mark in the boys Under-14 50m backstroke.

He touched home first in 27.89sec, beating his previous record -set in June last year - by 0.45sec.

This year's age group championships end on Sunday.
