Tampines win S-League

Tampines Rovers successfully defended their Singapore League (S-League) crown for their third straight title with four games remaining in the season.

This was decided after their closest contenders Albirex Niigata succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Balestier Khalsa last night at the Jurong East Stadium in Singapore.

Qiu Li gave Balestier Khalsa after blasting a long range effort into the net in the 19th minute before Park Kang Jin doubled their lead two minute before halftime.

Albirex were pushing forward and were given some life after Kento Nagasaki curled in a freekick in the 87th minute but it was not enough.

The result means that Albirex are on 40 points with only three games left on the schedule while Tampines hold an unassailable lead with 52 points.

The race for second place is still wide open with Home United in third a further points back but with an extra game to play.

Balestier Khalsa and Woodlands Wellington are both on 37 points while Tanjong Pagar United are sixth with 35 points.

Meanwhile, DPMM FC are doing their own battle at the second tier after moving up to seventh spot on Saturday night following a 1-0 victory over Hougang United at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.

They are currently on 33 points with three games left while Warriors are in eighth spot with 31 points. Geylang International and Harimau Muda followed respectively with 28 points while Hougang are second from bottom with 24 points.

The Young Lions (the Singapore Under-23 team are already destined to finish basement dwellers with only nine points.
