ALOR SETAR - Nur Syahirah Mustafa enjoyed resting on the mesh hammock in the porch of her home.
Sadly, there will be no more such catnaps for the 14-year-old, who was found dead with her neck entangled in the fishnet-like mesh.
Nur Syahirah was believed to have fallen off the hammock at her house in Kampung Alor Kumbang, Pendang.
Her padi farmer uncle Zainol Hassan, 63, found her slumped on the ground in a seated position with her neck snared in the mesh at about 5.30pm on Wednesday.
"I freed her neck from the mesh and thought that she was unconscious. I could not believe that she could die as the hammock was not that high," he added.
The Form Two student of the SM Agama Islah in Pendang, the youngest in a family of eight, was pronounced dead at Yan Hospital at about 7.45pm.
Her sister Norliza, 37, said Nur Syahirah was earlier watching over her one-year-old nephew.
"My son started crying and I took over to breastfeed him. Not long after that, we found Nur Syahira like that."
Pendang police chief Dept Supt Fadzil Hashim said that a post-mortem confirmed the cause of death was due to neck compression.
"The pathologist ruled this as an accident and police have classified the case as sudden death," he added.
Family members claimed her body at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here yesterday afternoon.
