TKGS regain softball crown

It was the perfect see-saw farewell game for Tanjong Katong Girls' School (TKGS) captain Sanggita Supramaniam and her seven Secondary 4 team-mates on as they regained their B Division softball title.

In a dramatic rematch of last year's final, TKGS won 7-5 against defending champions St Theresa's Convent (STC) at Kallang Fields, after they held STC scoreless in the fifth and final inning.

Sanggita, 16, was part of the team who were upset 3-7 by STC in last year's finals, and she was determined to take the championship back to TKGS. The reigning champions have now won eight of the last 10 titles.

"When we lost last year, we really wanted to come back and win it this year," said Sanggita. "We fought hard and we won, so I'm really happy."

TKGS raced to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning, but a spirited fightback meant they soon had to work hard to earn their victory.

STC captain Dinie Raman turned the game around in the third inning, hitting a home run to bring the score back to 3-2. Her team-mates, energised by a new-found confidence, built on her momentum and went ahead 4-3. TKGS pulled back to 4-4 at the end of the inning and had to fight back again from 4-5 in the fourth inning to finish 7-5. STC's inability to score in the final inning cemented the victory for TKGS.

Sanggita, who credited coach Josephine Lim for advice that helped the team stay focused, admitted to being nervous after STC scored four runs in the third inning.

"Coach always tells us that we have to do it one by one, that it is a process, and not to worry about the outcome, and it worked for us today."

Dinie, 15, was delighted to score the only home run of the game and to have helped her team stage a comeback, even though they eventually fell short of victory. Nevertheless, she was happy with how her team played.

"We lost, but we improved in this game and we gave it our all, so it's a performance that we can be proud of."

Her sentiments were echoed by STC coach Collin Toh, who was proud of his team's performance after an injury-plagued season.

"To me, the journey is more important than the end result, and I'm happy with how they came back in the game," said Toh.
