Toll-free numbers in the mobile age

TOLL-FREE "1800" numbers are free only if calls are made from a land line. Calls from mobile lines are charged the normal rates.

As such numbers are used mainly by banks and other service providers, where callers can be put on hold for several minutes, the costs can be substantial.

Since most people are using mobile phones these days, the perceived benefits of calling toll-free numbers are significantly diluted.
