PORT LOUIS - AirAsia X's much anticipated direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Mauritius has been launched.
The inaugural flight of the Airbus A330-300, carrying a full load of 377 passengers, landed at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport here on Tuesday.
At the launching ceremony, AirAsia X Bhd chairman Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said the thrice-a-week flight to Mauritius would provide some 57,200 seats annually.
"This will certainly boost tourism to Mauritius and also out of Mauritius to the rest of the region.
"I'm confident that with the proactive efforts in promotion and marketing by our respective tourism promotion boards, we can enhance the cross-flows of tourists between our two countries and going outside the region," she said.
AirAsia X chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail said the strong entry into the new market had given the airline confidence to promote the flight.
"Together with our short-haul affiliate AirAsia Group, our guests can now fly into Mauritius from any of the destinations within our extensive flight network across Asia, Australia and the Middle East via Kuala Lumpur," he said.
Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority director Kevin Ramkaloan said AirAsia represented the new connectivity from Asia to Mauritius.
Also present were AirAsia X group CEO Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, director Datuk Fam Lee Ee, North Asia president Kathleen Tan, Tourism Malaysia Johannesburg director Khairulnizam Zakaria, Mauritius High Commissioner to Malaysia Issop Patel, Airports of Mauritius Co Ltd & Airport Terminal Operations chairman Roshan Seetohul, Airports of Mauritius Co Ltd CEO Romesh Bhoyroo and Mauritius Civil Aviation director Iswarduth Pokhun.
The budget airline announced a special all-in-fares from as low as RM199 (S$65.91) one-way on standard seats and from RM1,599 one-way for its premium flatbeds.
The promotional fares are available for booking online from now till Oct 9 at airasia.com as well as its mobile app on iPhone and Android devices and the mobile site mobile.airasia.com, with the travel period from Oct 5 to March 31 next year.
