PORT LOUIS - AirAsia X's much anticipated direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Mauritius has been launched.

The inaugural flight of the Airbus A330-300, carrying a full load of 377 passengers, landed at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport here on Tuesday.

At the launching ceremony, AirAsia X Bhd chairman Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz said the thrice-a-week flight to Mauritius would provide some 57,200 seats annually.

"This will certainly boost tourism to Mauritius and also out of Mauritius to the rest of the region.

"I'm confident that with the proactive efforts in promotion and marketing by our respective tourism promotion boards, we can enhance the cross-flows of tourists between our two countries and going outside the region," she said.

AirAsia X chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail said the strong entry into the new market had given the airline confidence to promote the flight.

"Together with our short-haul affiliate AirAsia Group, our guests can now fly into Mauritius from any of the destinations within our extensive flight network across Asia, Australia and the Middle East via Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority director Kevin Ramkaloan said AirAsia represented the new connectivity from Asia to Mauritius.
