KLIA a top 5 airport in Asia for self-connect passengers


Travellers today are more savvy, with many taking the option of arranging their own itineraries and choosing to self-connect their flights. Self-connect passengers are basically those who travel on two separate tickets to get to their destination, often with different carriers, either to save money or for stopovers along the way.

Kuala Lumpur's KLIA is ranked among the Top 5 Airports in Asia (coming in at the fifth position) for self-connect passengers. This was revealed in recent data released by global travel search engine Skyscanner. The data showed that self-connections are on the rise, with the average percentage of users choosing to self-connect over taking a flight route with a single carrier increasing to 12.6 per cent last year, from 11.6 per cent the previous year.

Skyscanner commercial director Hugh Aitken said: "In the age of the savvy traveller, and with the growth of low cost carriers, an increasing number of passengers are more aware of their options, choosing to self-connect their travel as a result. For both airports and airlines, having a full picture of the searches and bookings passengers are making, including their preferences for connections, routes and pricing, is essential if they are to capitalise on the market."

The data also revealed that the airports most self-connect passengers travelled through are Dublin (28 per cent seats booked as part of self-connect trip), Los Angeles' LAX (33 per cent seats booked as part of self-connect trip), and Singapore's Changi airport (17 per cent seats booked as part of self-connect trip), with each topping the list for their respective regions of Europe, Americas, and Asia.

Although the development of budget airlines in Asia has been slower, Singapore's Changi is fast becoming a popular self-connection point, and this will no doubt increase in years to come as low cost carriers gain a stronger presence in the region. Malaysia's KLIA follows closely behind Singapore with its rising presence of low cost carriers.

The analysis is based on data collected from the search engine's 50 million monthly users searching for flights last year, by Skyscanner's Travel Insight tool, and the prices shown are in US dollars.
