COLOMBO - In Colombo, there is a long stretch of lawn facing the sea called Galle Face Green, a date spot where many couples start gathering from the evening.
At a food stall, I bought vaday, a local snack priced at 30 rupees (S$0.60) each. The deep-fried snack is made of mashed lentils, flour and chili pepper.
I ate it while gazing at the sunset over the Arabian Sea, which made me feel great.
The seafood version topped with shrimp and crab sells well. Chopped onions are sprinkled on it followed by a chili sauce.

The texture is similar to Satsuma-age fish cakes, and the onion eases the pungency a bit. It was so nice I automatically asked for more.
Kannaa, 24, sells about 200 pieces of vaday every day.
"Though it is a Tamil dish, Sinhalese people also like it," he said with a smile. "The civil war between the two ethnic groups is over. Vaday is a wonderful snack, like a symbol of peace."
