VJC runner sprints to 200m gold

Victorial Junior College sprinter Janine Lim may have given herself the best parting gift.

Yesterday's 200m gold-medal outing - in the Schools National Track and Field Championships at the Bukit Gombak Stadium - could be her last track meet as the final-year student looks to venture into other competitive sports in university.

The A Division win was made even sweeter as the 17-year-old was nursing a fever. But once the starter's gun went off, she raced to a clear lead and her time of 26.91sec was almost a second ahead of her closest rival's.

Finishing second was Anglo-Chinese School (Independent)'s Tan Si Wen who recorded a personal best of 27.84, a 0.44 improvement from her timing at the semi-finals last Monday.

Claudia Sng from Hwa Chong Institution was third in 27.99.

The same event in the B Division saw Amirah Aljunied from CHIJ (Toa Payoh) finishing first in 25.94, missing her personal best by 0.02.

Amirah, a Secondary 4 student who had won bronze last year, said: "I'm a bit disappointed but I'm almost there and happy with my first place today."

She edged out Ismi Zakiah Kashful Anwar and Nurul Syarah Razali from Singapore Sports School (SSP) who came in second and third, in 26.39 and 26.51, respectively.

In the C Division, however, SSP struck gold when Diane Hilary Pragasam won the 200m in 26.78sec, beating Cedar Girls' Haanee Hamkah (27.09) and SSP schoolmate Norasyiqin Mohamed Wahid (27.43).

Coming in second was a surprise for Haanee, 13, daughter of former national sprinter Hamkah Afik who was at the stadium with other family members to lend their support.

"I thought I couldn't do it because there was so much pressure but I felt more confident after a few races," she said
