Wally makes golf easy

SINGAPORE - With fun props and training aids, renowned instructor Wally Armstrong made golf coaching methods easily digestible to about 50 local professionals at Orchid Country Club.

Armstrong, an American who has competed in more than 300 US PGA Tour events, also used his experience as a top golfer to show the local pros that golf can be an easy game.

But the basics must be right, emphasised the 68-year-old who finished tied fifth in the 1978 US Masters.

"Wally", as he is popularly called, turned professional in 1970 and has competed in all the Majors - the US Masters, the British Open, US Open and the PGA Championship.

Born in New London, Connecticut, he played in the PGA Tour in the 70s and 80s, after graduating from the University of Florida with a degree in physical education and masters in public health.

Knowledgeable and articulate, he told his young audience, mainly A and B professionals, that when coaching "you must make learning golf simple, fun and easy to understand".

He also talked about his instructional tapes and videos and created visual demonstrations that made his points memorable.

Singapore Professional Golfers Association president M Murugiah, who brought in Wally to educate his young teaching and playing professionals, said: "Our young pros need to upgrade themselves instead of sticking to outdated methods. With new technology, golf coaching is a whole new experience.

"Wally comes with both playing and teaching experience, and thus he could share his knowledge with our upcoming pros.

"Also, with his input, we hope to achieve a certain degree of consistency in our teaching methods.

"In that sense, I believe that the two-day session was worthwhile."
