Mr Tan Chik Khwang asked if the recent fluctuation in Malaysian egg prices was due to the increase in Causeway toll charges ("Hefty hike in egg prices"; Tuesday).
Egg prices are not affected by toll charges. Instead, the price increase is due to a recent fluctuation in the supply of eggs from Malaysia after the authorities suspended imports from various farms over health and safety concerns.
Product prices can also fluctuate because of various reasons such as the cost of raw materials, reductions in supply and economic conditions, including hygiene factors.
As a retailer and price taker, we buy eggs from our suppliers and are exposed to these price trends.
We will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with our suppliers to ensure we provide good value to our consumers. We advise customers not to stockpile as eggs have limited shelf lives, like all other fresh produce.
