Ang pau for lavish banquets draining guests' pockets

China - It has become a trend for parents in China to throw luxurious banquets for children who successfully enter universities.

They would organise a banquet with about 30 to 40 tables and their guests would have to fork out ang pow for such events, according to China Press, citing a Xinhua News Agency report.

A guest said he spent 4,000 yuan (S$833) on ang pow for the banquets recently, and that for every invitation, he gave at least RM100.

"I can no longer afford it," he said.

Another guest who earns about RM3,300 a month said he spent about RM1,700 on ang pow last month alone.

Many guests interviewed said they could no longer afford to attend such events.
