GEORGE TOWN - It was a vintage-style Valentine's Day wedding for antique sellers Edly Teh Liam Hong and Clestine Chan Jun Siew, who turned up at the Eastern and Oriental Hotel in Malaysia in a 1982 Volkswagen Kombi.
Teh, 26, said they had originally planned to hold the wedding ceremony on Sunday after registering on July 26 last year.
"But we were told by the hotel that bookings were full on that day. That's when the hotel told us that there was an opening for Valentine's Day," he said in Malaysia yesterday.
Chan, 24, said that although she got to know her husband via a social networking site when she was 14, they only started dating three years ago.
"I was very sick, and warded in a hospital. A week after I was discharged, we went out on our first date," she said.
She said they chose to use the Volkswagen Kombi as their bridal car because they loved vintage and that it fitted with their wedding theme.
"I have always liked this model and I was only able to buy it last year," said Chan, adding that they rented out the car to be used at weddings.
"But this time around, we are using it as our bridal car," said Teh.
Teh added that although he was nervous about making his wedding speech, he was glad that both he and Chan were finally married on the special "East meets West Valentine's Day" this year where Valentine's Day coincides with Chap Goh Meh, the Chinese Valentine's Day where those who are single throw mandarin oranges into the sea in search of love.
