Ask Urban: Is it possible to look feminine while wearing denim overalls?

Denim overalls, or dungarees as they are sometimes called, are a staple of the pre-school set. But recently, fashionistas have started wearing them in chic ways too. An easy way to wear them and still look feminine is to combine them with classic, elegant pieces and add a pop of colour.

For example, if you decide to go with a more casual look, I would suggest taking inspiration from the gamine style icons of the past, such as Audrey Hepburn or Jean Seberg. They had an easy, almost tomboyish style but always looked feminine.

Take a pair of denim overalls like this one from Bershka (photo 1, $99.90, from B2-09 Ion Orchard) and pair it with a classic striped shirt from Saint James (photo 2, $119, from Rockstar at 22 Orchard Road) and a pair of red ballet flats from Repetto (photo 3, $420, from 03-15B Ion Orchard). The striped shirt is a classic piece and the feminine shoe in a striking colour gives the whole look a girly twist.

For a more grown-up take on denim overalls, pair it with pieces such as a classic white shirt like this one from Cos (photo 4, $115, from 03-23 Ion Orchard) and ladylike pumps or slingbacks like this Pedro pair (photo 5, $86, from B1-32 Wisma Atria).

Add a chunky chain necklace like this Designsix piece (photo 6, $37, from www.asos.com) for a finishing touch. The elegance of the shirt, pumps and necklace elevate the casualness of the overalls. Paired with red lips, the look is feminine and architectural.

Another look you can try when it comes to denim overalls is to undo the straps and fold them over for a look more similar to boyfriend jeans. Just make sure the straps and top do not hang too low to the point of impeding your stride.

And as always, cuff the ends of the (not-tight) overalls to show off the ankle and the feminine shoes.
