In a recent Instagram post, nine-year-old Suri Cruise is bending down, spray-painting a hopscotch board, with her long brown hair casually swept up into a high bun.

From this envious back view of Suri's glorious lush locks - captured by her actress mother Katie Holmes and put up on Holmes' Instagram - it's clear that Suri has inherited her mother's gorgeous locks.

It is this magnificent brunette mane that landed Holmes the role of Alterna Haircare's first celebrity spokesperson and global brand ambassador back in January 2013.

Holmes, also the first celebrity face for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics in 2012, was reported as the co-owner of Alterna Haircare when she was appointed global spokesperson for the brand but is legally no longer co-owner after the German Henkel Group's acquisition of the brand in 2014.

Now part of the Henkel Beauty Care, Alterna Haircare is an American luxury haircare brand that is free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates and other harsh or unnecessary additives.

While Holmes is the "face and hair" of Alterna, the brand confirms that she also shares her creative and consumer insights to help the brand grow, and gets involved by testing formulas such as the CC Cream, where Holmes provided ideas on new ways of using it.

In an interview for People magazine, executive editor for the publication Kate Coyne said what really stood out when interviewing Holmes in person was her hair.

Coyne says, "She has, no kidding, perfect hair. The kind of hair you would normally hate someone for having - thick, lustrous, straight-but-not-flat, shiny-but-not-limp, simply gorgeous hair. It was hard not to stare."

Holmes, who was previously married to actor Tom Cruise, is known for her role as Joey Potter in the television teen drama series, Dawson's Creek from 1998 to 2003.

For a television series Holmes' poise landed her the role of Jackie Kennedy in The Kennedys in 2011 and in The Kennedys: After Camelot in 2016.

Her movies include Disturbing Behaviour, Teaching Mrs Tingle, Pieces of April and in her most high profile role Holmes played Rachel Dawes opposite Christian Bale's Batman in Batman Begins in 2005.

Holmes' latest movie All We Had - an adaptation of Annie Weatherwax's debut novel and scripted by Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone - marks her directorial debut.

In the movie where Holmes co-stars with Luke Wilson and Stefania LaVie Owen, she takes on the role of Rita Carmichael who moves to a small town in Ohio with her daughter, looking for a better life after the 2008 financial crisis.

Interestingly it is a role that mirrors Holmes' current situation as that of a single working mother raising a young daughter.

For this role Holmes had her signature long straight hair cut and re-styled into a shorter wavy bob.

"I like this look! It's not too much shorter, so it doesn't feel like a big change. It's still pretty versatile," Holmes says about her new look in an e-mail interview.

On a regular day she says, "I like to keep it simple. A good ponytail will take you a long way!"

"I do my own hair on a day to day basis, but when I have an important red carpet appearance I trust the professionals."

Like mortal women Holmes too has hair issues, as she points out that her hair that is naturally a bit wavy can be a little dry, which is why she swears by the Alterna Haircare Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner.

"I'm so proud to work with Alterna Haircare, not only because of the incredible products, but because of their commitment to keeping products free of harsh and synthetic ingredients. It's good for my hair and good for the earth, so I feel good using it," she says.

The brand's new campaign celebrates several top Alterna Haircare products, including Caviar CC Cream and its newest product, the Caviar Repair Fill & Fix Treatment Masque.

The Caviar Repair Fill & Fix Treatment Masque transforms coloured, chemically processed or damaged hair with its deep reparative treatment with Strand-Building Proteins that help to restructure strands, filling in gaps and tears while smoothing hair cuticle.

The campaign's creative concept was driven by Alterna global artistic director Michael Shaun Corby, who sought a light, airy feeling inspired by the beautiful healthy hair created by Alterna Haircare products, which are all free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates and other harsh or unnecessary additives.

"We approached this campaign with a concept of 'laid back luxe'," says Corby in a press statement. "The concept allowed us to capture Katie in an authentic, un-posed, confident moment. Just because a woman is busy doesn't mean she should compromise her personal style or feeling confident."

On her favourite Alterna products she says, "I love the Caviar Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner - I use these daily to keep my hair healthy and hydrated. I also use the Caviar CC Cream every day, it's everything you need in one product. If my hair is extra dry, I'll use a spritz of the Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Oil Mist."

"The CC Cream is a fantastic all-in-one product that gives your hair shine, UV protection, frizz control, light hold and much more. It's a really versatile product that will simplify your beauty routine," she points out.

For anyone who has damaged hair, Holmes recommends the Caviar Repair Fill & Fix Treatment Masque, which she uses once a week to nourish and treat her hair after all the styling and heat tools.

How has motherhood affected your beauty routine? "It has simplified some of my beauty steps; as a mum, you just want to be efficient!" she replies.

"Now, when it comes to choosing beauty products I look for something that will simplify my routine and have really clean formulas, like Alterna's products."

When she's tight on time Holmes says, "I always wear a little bit of blush. Even if you don't put on anything else, blush makes you look so much more awake and brightens your whole face."

As a single working mother Holmes says it's not always easy to find time, but she tries to be active in some way every day from running, yoga to spinning.

Unlike most celebrities who post highly choreographed pictures of themselves on social media, Holmes' instagram refreshingly shows very natural shots of herself and at times without make-up.

With the influence of social media where images are powerful, and young women especially, are pressured to look a certain way, what would you tell them? "I would say that true beauty truly does come from within. If you're taking good care of yourself, you're confident and you're kind to others - that will shine through," she says.

Referring to the adorable nine-year-old Suri who is looking like a mini Holmes, Holmes says, "I want to be a good role model, just like my mum was for me. My mum was the most important influence on me growing up and is my number one beauty icon - she's beautiful inside and out."

The Alterna Caviar Repair Fill & Fix Treatment Masque priced at RM160 is exclusively available at Sephora.
