Love Bonito's Velda Tan shares pregnancy shocker

Singaporean fashion influencer Velda Tan is pregnant!

Two days ago, the fashion entrepreneur revealed on Instagram that she and her husband, restaurateur Frederick Yap, would be expecting their first child.

But it wasn't your ordinary "we've got a bun in the oven" type posts - Tan followed up the announcement with another post yesterday revealing that she was suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a condition that results in "[h]ormonal fluctuations, weight gain & infertility".

Tan shared more about her experience in treating PCOS, which included "horrible cycles of medication to stimulate egg growth, with no result, only more pain, more weight gain, and cycle after cycle of disappointment."

However, she persevered over the next few years and is currently 12 weeks pregnant. Talk about blessings in disguise!

Congratulations to the happy couple.

Here is the full transcript of her inspiring Instagram post:

"Feeling so loved & very blessed ? I thought I should share about my journey to pregnancy, hopefully it'll help anyone who might be in the same boat. It's gonna be a little long so bear with me!

I found out I had PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) at my first proper gynae [sic] check 5 years ago, when Fred and I got married. This condition was a result of the stress of running my first business & my genetic make. Doc told me I had to be on medication if I wanted to conceive but I didn't take it seriously then.

Hormonal fluctuations, weight gain & infertility were the few byproducts of PCOS, and my condition was made worse when I had a spout of depression after I left the business. Things were pretty unstable at that time so Freddy and I put family planning on hold.

We both went on to start new businesses, and though things were back to normal, the fast paced lifestyle took a toll on our couple time & my health. Eventually we found out that I wasn't ovulating anymore (i.e. my body stopped producing eggs for fertilisation and thus no chance of pregnancy).

Over the next year I was put on horrible cycles of medication to stimulate egg growth, with no result, only more pain, more weight gain, and cycle after cycle of disappointment. Life was pretty much a rollercoaster [sic] of emotions especially while trying to run a young company.

Things got pretty frustrating so again, we decided to put family planning on hold. At that point my doctor didn't recommend other methods either.

I am not sure why it never occured [sic] to me to get a second opinion/diagnosis or treatment earlier but I eventually did after a friend recommended her fertility doctor, and things turned around immediately. Haha I'm not sure if you're still reading but I will save the next part for another time!

Looking back, this whole journey makes me feel extremely grateful for our little miracle. I'm soooo [sic] thankful we hung on and didn't lose faith because God works in the most marvellous [sic] ways we can never comprehend. ?

Anyone has PCOS too? I know it affects an average of 1 in 5 women and each condition differs. If you'd like to share- I'd love to hear your story about how you are overcoming (or overcame) it!"

Here's a short briefing on PCOS, in case you were wondering.

Basically the condition occurs when a woman's hormones are out of balance, making it difficult to get pregnant. According to WomensHealth.gov, one in ten women of childbearing age suffer from this.

PCOS has also been linked to serious health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
