More funds for parent support groups

The Ministry of Education (MOE) will extend its current help to Parent Support Groups (PSG), by providing fund top-ups of up to $2,500 per year.

The PSG Fund was introduced in 2012 - till now a one-off payment of $2,500 by MOE - to promote the engagement of parents via outreach programmes and parent-child bonding events.

PSGs are attached to individual schools and made up of parents of students or former students. Programmes organised by PSG members include those that teach home skills such as cooking and sewing, as well as those that expose students to other Asian cultures. These programmes, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Education and Manpower), Mr Hawazi Daipi, "contribute very directly towards our children's well-roundedness". He said that the fund has boosted understanding between parents and schools, and facilitated the exchange of knowledge among parents.

Speaking during the Committee of Supply debate in Parliament yesterday, he brought up the example of Park View Primary School where the fund is used to organise workshops for parents. One was on celebrating a pro-family mindset.

"I hope that (the fund) will sustain the momentum of good programmes we have today, while enabling more parents to play a more active role in their child's education," he said. The first PSG conference, which will act as a platform for PSGs to share practices, will be held next month.
