SINGAPORE - Love is in the air at Hougang Mall.
Better known as a one-stop source for groceries, household goods and appliances, it will host 20 couples who will renew their wedding vows in its atrium on Saturday.
"We wanted to do something more suitable for the demographics of Hougang Mall's shoppers, who are mostly in their 40s and likely to be married. We hope to rekindle their romance and encourage them to spend more time with each other," said a spokesman for AsiaMalls, which manages Hougang Mall.
This is the first time AsiaMalls is offering such an event.
Under the Valentine's Day promotion, the couples will receive a Gucci fragrance set worth $229 and an opportunity to attend a free marriage workshop.
They can also take part in games where they can win travel vouchers and a photo shoot.
The night will end with a catered barbecue dinner on Hougang Mall's rooftop.
The 20 couples will be picked via a lucky draw. Entry for the draw started on Thursday.
To qualify, shoppers have to spend at least $100 at Harvey Norman or FairPrice in Hougang Mall. They can combine receipts from both stores to make up $100.
Shoppers can also enter the draw by spending $80 at other participating stores.
Other prizes up for grabs in the draw include $5 AsiaMalls vouchers, $10 FairPrice vouchers, and a chance to use an instant-photo booth.
Only couples who have been married for at least five years are eligible for the vow-renewal prize.
Participants for the instant-photo booth prize and wedding-vow renewal ceremony will be selected on Thursday.
Shoppers can submit entries to win vouchers until Feb 25.
Housewife Susan Teo, 48, said she would not mind taking part in the event as it would be an "interesting way" for her and her husband of 18 years to spend the Valentine's Day weekend.
"It sounds fun and my husband and I can spend some quality time together," she said.
