Revealed: Marilyn Monroe's iconic quote on Chanel No. 5

In a brilliant bit of marketing, Chanel has announced that the "new" face for what is arguably the most recognisable fragrance in the world is Marilyn herself.

The greatest Hollywood sex symbol there ever was, Marilyn's provocative response to a reporter's question on what she wore to bed remains one of the greatest quotes in entertainment journalism.

And now, the French fashion house has dug deep into the archives and unearthed a previously unreleased radio interview, conducted with Marilyn back in April 1960 - two years before her untimely death. In her breathy, unmistakable coo, Marilyn can be heard discussing her love affair with Chanel No. 5:

"You know, they ask me questions. Just an example: 'What do you wear to bed ? A pajama top? The bottoms of the pajamas? A nightgown?' So I said, 'Chanel No. 5,' because it's the truth. And yet, I don't want to say 'nude.' But it's the truth!"

The audiovisual snippet and accompanying black-and-white images will be all over the billboards and TV very soon, although a Chanel rep says the final campaign image has not been decided upon yet.
